Butter Update. Microphone?

Posted by Brewster - April 13th, 2012

So I'm making a new cartoon entitled Butter. At least that's what it is so far, I might change it if I think of a better title but for now it's Butter. Anyway basically it's about a guy who makes a cake and chases butter. It's a pretty simple premise but I think I'm gonna do a good job on it, so get excited for that.

I'm on the fence about using voices in it. I don't want to get a voice actor for it because it would only be like a sentence or two for the whole animation. But I don't want to use my own voice because usually whenever I talk in one of my flashes it kinda dampens the quality of it.

Maybe it's just my bad acting but I think if I get a better microphone my sound quality will improve. The only problem is I'd need it on the cheap. And I mean like dirt cheap... dirt dirt dirt cheap. I've looked around on the internet a little and found out that those mics don't exist, but if some how you stumble upon one let me know.

EDIT: I'll also be participating in at least the novice round of NATA this year so WOOPWOOPWOOP.

Butter Update. Microphone?

Alright well usually it's the acting itself that makes it sound better. The microphone will just make it sound more clear. But I would rather hear good acting with a bad microphone than bad acting with a good microphone.

Best to learn how to voice act. I don't think I'm really good at it, so I'm not sure if my advice is really the best, but one thing I can tell you is that you should probably project your voice more... talk louder, your acting will usually be a little bit naturally better if you do that.

But if you want a decent microphone that's dirt cheap... do you mean like under $10? Look on Amazon.com or something to find one of those ones that have a stand, they sound okay. Don't get a headset if you want decent quality, they never really sound good.

Also, one more thing, you can put a sock over the microphone to almost act like a pop filter, so you can get closer to it, thus it will be able to pick up the depth of your voice more yet won't pick up all those pops and hisses so much. Just a little thing I learned from experience.

Whatever you get though, good luck!

Yeah you're right, it's more about the acting than it is the quality of sound. And I feel like I have the potential to produce decent sounding VA, it's just that I think with a better mic it will allow me to try different things with my voice without it sounding kinda shitty quality-wise up in playback. Yeah around like $10-20 was what I was thinking, I just think anything's better than an old Karaoke Revolution microphone. Thanks for the response!

Sounds fun.

Just a suggestion for future productions: I would LOVE to see a Maximum Happiness 2. LOVE LOVE LOVE to see it one day.

Well Maximum Happiness was actually a sequel of sorts to an animation I did back in the day called Extreme Happiness. So that might quench your thirst for more Happiness. It's kinda shitty and not as good as Maximum but I still kinda like it.

But yeah Happiness 3 is always a possibility if I ever come up with some good ideas. But I want to focus on some new stuff before that.

I think this will solve your mic problem bro, at least for now. It's not the best or most expensive mic but from what I've gathered, because it's a USB mic and not a mic that plugs in to the computer's sound card, it records clearer sound (something about the sound card splitting its resources/ being crappy in general and the USB input not having to use the computer's built in mic capability). Basically, when you plug a mic into the microphone jack, you are simply using the computer's built in mic functions which tend to be very low quality. By using a USB mic instead you avoid having to use the built in functions of the computer you are using, and therefore you would usually get a clearer sound. By that reasoning I went ahead and ordered the $20 mic that I posted in the above link after checking the reviews to scope it out a bit. It won't be as great as a professional microphone, but I think it will be good enough to use for animation or music, plus in the description it says that it has a noise cancelling feature, so that's a good start at least and you could always touch up your audio in an audio editor to get it perfect (that's what I'm going to do, anyway).

I'm also planning on doing NATA this year, so best of luck to both of us and hopefully I'll see you in the second round.

Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah that was actually one of the mics I found in my brief research and I think it looks pretty good.

Good luck on NATA!

sounds awesome
good luck on your NATA entry/entries

Thanks!
